1 My dark night has come round again.

2 The world goes on but I return

3 to haunt myself. I freeze and burn.

4 I am the bare figure of pain.

5 Frost crystals and the level ice,

6 the scourging snow, the male-voiced storm,

7 they all perform my requiem.

8 My hearth goes cold, my fire dies.

9 Are there still some who call me prince?

10 The King of Kings, the Lord of All

11 revoked my title, worked my downfall,

12 unhoused, unwived me for my sins.

13 Why did He spare my life at Moira?

14 Why did He grudge me death in battle?

15 Why ordained the hag of the mill

16 His hound of heaven and my fury?

17 The mill-hag's millstone round my neck!

18 Hell roast her soul! She dragged me down

19 when I leaped up in agitation.

20 I fell for that old witch's trick.

21 Then Lynchseachan was in full cry,

22 a bloodhound never off my trail.

23 I fell for his lies too and fell

24 among captors out of the tree.

25 They made me face the love I'd lost.

26 They tied me up and carried me

27 back to the house. The mockery!

28 I overheard their victory feast
